The Denon AVR-1909 was a standout mid-range 7.1 channel A/V receiver released in 2008. It was particularly popular because it brought "High Definition" audio decoding (Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD) to a more accessible price point during the early years of Blu-ray.

1. Core Audio Power

  • Channels: 7.1 Channel Surround Sound.

  • Power Output: 90 Watts per channel (8 ohms, 20Hz–20kHz, 0.08% THD).

  • High-Current Design: Features a "High Current" power supply to handle demanding speaker loads and maintain sound clarity at high volumes.

2. Audio Decoding & Processing

The 1909 was one of the first in its class to offer full "lossless" audio support:

  • HD Formats: Full decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

  • Standard Formats: Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24, and Pro Logic IIx.

  • Audyssey MultEQ: This was a major selling point. It uses a calibration microphone to measure your room's acoustics and automatically adjust the EQ and timing for up to six seating positions.

  • Audyssey Dynamic Volume & EQ: Features that balance sudden volume spikes (like loud commercials) and maintain rich bass even when listening at low volumes.

3. Video Performance

  • HDMI: 3 Inputs / 1 Output (HDMI version 1.3a).

  • Upconversion: It can take analog signals (like your VCR or older game consoles) and convert them to digital so they can be sent to your TV through a single HDMI cable.

  • Faroudja DCDi Edge: Features high-quality scaling that can boost standard-definition video up to 1080p.

5. Physical Specs & General Info

  • Dimensions: 17.1" W x 6.7" H x 14.9" D.

  • Weight: 25.1 lbs (11.4 kg).

  • Second Zone: Supports "Zone 2" audio, allowing you to play a different music source in another room while a movie plays in the main room.

Modern Context: Is it still good?

  • The Good: The amplifier section is excellent. If you are using it for music or a dedicated 1080p home theater, the 90W per channel is robust and "clean."

  • The Bad: The HDMI 1.3a ports do not support 4K, HDR, or ARC/eARC.

  • The Solution: If you have a 4K TV, you should plug your 4K devices (Roku, PS5) directly into the TV and run an Optical cable from the TV back to the Denon for sound. You'll lose the lossless HD audio, but you'll keep the 4K picture!
